My boyfriend and I were kind of hired at a convenience store right near where we both live. The manager initially said she’d hire at least one of us but she wasn’t sure about both because of the number of hours she needed to fill in the schedule. But, she said that she’d talk to the manager of another store in the same chain to see about getting us some hours there. We went in for another interview and took their employee computer survey, which we both passed and we both passed the background check. So she set up training days for both of us this week.

He came back from his scheduled training about five minutes after it was supposed to start this morning. She changed her mind. Neither of us has a job there. Why? Because we can’t work on Sunday.

“There are conversations going on about the Church constantly. Those conversations will continue whether or not we choose to participate in them. But we cannot stand on the sidelines while others, including our critics, attempt to define what the Church teaches. While some conversations have audiences in the thousands or even millions, most are much, much smaller. But all conversations have an impact on those who participate in them. Perceptions of the Church are established one conversation at a time.”

Thanks for following me! =)

Of course! I’m always down to follow someone blogging about the faith. :)

I love all your posts today Alex!

Aww, thank you! I’m really glad. :)

I totally dig all of your scrapbook stuff. It reminded me that I have a bunch of that stuff stashed with all of my arts and crafts stuff that I can use on letters to my boyfriend when he goes on his mission. :D

Elena

During Sunday School today we talked about faith. I can’t wait to share Alma 32 with Elena (the friend I mentioned before who’s interested in the church). I love Alma 32, especially verses 17 and 18:

17 Yea, there are many who do say: If thou wilt show unto us a sign from heaven, then we shall know of a surety; then we shall believe.

18 Now I ask, is this faith? Behold, I say unto you, Nay; for if a man knoweth a thing he hath no cause to believe, for he knoweth it.

These verses just make such an amazing point and I feel like she’ll be able to connect with it. She has the seed of faith, I know she does, she just needs some help to nurture it. It’s just difficult because she lives 700 miles away from me and doesn’t really want to meet with the missionaries (yet). But she’s definitely interested and she has been for a while and that’s the important first step. She even ordered a copy of the Book of Mormon after I mentioned only once that she could get one for free! :D That was really impressive. I can’t wait to take her to church when I visit in August, especially since it turns out that one of the girls in my branch is the daughter if the bishop there.

She’s been reading the Book of Mormon some and praying. She even told me that she’s starting to see the power of prayer! I’m really excited for her. Now I completely understand exactly what everyone i the church meant when they said that they were excited for me not long ago at all. It’s so amazing to see it from the other side now.

I sent her a copy of True to the Faith because I think she’ll get a lot out of that. I just want to do everything I can to show Elena that this church is true and how good it is. She she believes in God and she already lives almost the entire Word of Wisdom (I think she drinks tea. That was the only really hard thing for me to give up.) and I know she would be a fantastic member. I can’t wait to see how this progresses and I’m so happy that I get to be here to help her.

Weekend full of church <3

I HAVE HOME TEACHERS! :D

I just found out who they are yesterday. I’m excited! I had a really good missionary lesson and they came (I’m kind of still transitioning into full membership. :P). They’re a couple of really relaxed guys.

Right after my lesson a bunch of us from the branch went to a YSA sports night in Indianapolis. I’m not usually a sports person but it was a good time. The only food they really had there was pizza which was a downer because I can’t eat cheese…so one of my home teachers saved my his crusts. lol. What a good home teacher… And I kicked my boyfriend’s butt playing cornhole. ;)

.

Then today was beyond amazing.

I had breakfast with my boyfriend before church. (I made pancakes.) We walked, as usual and it was gorgeous outside. I can already feel myself getting in better shape this summer from walking everywhere. (Church is about two miles away from home and it’s a mile to where I work and to the Institute building.)

Sacrament Meeting was awesome. Today was only the second time I’ve gotten to partake of the sacrament and I love it. Elders Swain and McCarrey gave talks and they were both great. Elder McCarrey talked about how to do better missionary work and after listening to him I feel more prepared for the next conversation I have with a friend I’m talking to about the church. Another branch member gave a very personal talk about a very wide range of topics. All were especially good today.

This was also my first Sunday with a joint third hour. It was fantastic! Everyone sat in the very front of the chapel and no one sat on the outside rows. I liked being that close to everyone. It felt a lot more intimate. President Decker is always hilarious. His talks are so much fun to hear. (And he talks like Paul Harvey, which I LOVE. He gave a talk the first time I came to church and I think it’s part of what got me hooked. lol) I haven’t laughed so much at church in a long time. I love when speakers are funny and engaging but still keep everything directly relevant to the gospel. It’s a gift.

After church I came home and did some math to figure out my first tithing payment. :D I was surprised. I’ve been struggling financially to get my feet on the ground so far this summer and everything really came together this week. It’s amazing. For the first time I’ve got steady work (in my field of study!), a kitchen full of food on top of rent money, and somebody to love who loves me in return. I’m a member of the true church of Jesus Christ with friends all around. When I was figuring out my tithing today I dropped to my knees and thanked the Lord with tears in my eyes because I am so blessed. In the name of Jesus Christ, AMEN.

Hey! Thanks for following and i love your blogname. Im excited to read more of you!

Thank so much!! I have a whole list of things I want to discuss on here so there will definitely be more to read.

Also, in answer to your question about using tumblr on Sunday…
I don’t feel that it’s breaking the sabbath. Personally, I don’t use facebook, twitter, or my secular tumblr on Sunday but I use this account to stay active in the LDS tumblr community. I’m still focusing on the gospel. There are so many good posts here that really make me think about different aspects of my faith that I feel like it’s totally Sunday appropriate.

So. The two questions I always ask. How did you find me? What made you decide to follow my blog?

1. I think I originally saw your blog in the list put out by TumblrStake? But I’ve seen a lot of things reblogged from you by various members and investigators on tumblr.

2. I love your posts about the gospel and the church. I started this blog to write about my favorite scriptures, spiritual experiences, things going on in my branch, etc., and I found this entire LDs tumblr community. I can’t get enough. :) I love how you discuss the scriptures and relate to them. It’s a bit tricky to find LDS blogs with that kind of content uninterrupted by a bunch of unrelated rebloged pictures of girls in short skirts and lyrics. (Nothing against those blogs, they’re just not why I’m here.) Keep up the good work! :)

For those of you who missed the post about it, let me explain:

If you, dear follower, are a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I invite you to share some thoughts from your church meetings tomorrow. Just drop a few lines about what happened in Sacrament meeting, a lesson in Sunday school that touched your heart, or something you learned in your YM/YW/Priesthood/Relief Society meeting. TAG THAT POST with #tumblrsabbathshare and then go track that tag (to track a tag, search for it then on the search results there will be an option on the side to “track this tag” do it!)

After church tomorrow we will all get to share our thoughts and feelings with eachother. Let’s make this happen!

I’m looking forward to this more than you even know.

Also. Please reblog this if you are going to do it so you can get the message out to all of your LDS followers.

AH! :D GOOD TIMES!

I am also SO excited for this. Even if you’re not a member and are wanting to learn more, come check this out!  I love being apart of such a wonderful group of people set apart from the ordinary. I love that I am a member of The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-Day Saints.

:( I can’t go to church today because I don’t have a ride. I hope we can do this again another week so I can participate!

I think we should do this every week. This is the kind of thing my blog is about but I love the tag idea and I’d love to have more people involved in sharing this kind of thing!

“Perhaps the reason we respond so universally to our mothers’ love is because it typifies the love of our Savior.” Elder Bradley D. Foster of the Seventy, “Mother Told Me,” Ensign, May 2010

.

I’m definitely having prayers answered through my mother right now and I’m definitely not the only one.

I’ve always been grateful for my mother. She’s an amazing woman. She’s asked me not to turn out like her but I think that’s exactly what I’ve done (with the addition of what Ben calls my “wifeyness” :P) and I couldn’t be happier about it.

I can’t imagine where I’d be without her. She’s the one person who’s been on my side, always supporting me for my whole life, and I mean the only one. She’s not at all a religious person and she’s been rather surprised by and confused about my conversion but she’s supported me because she sincerely wants me to be happy. Since she lives 700 miles away she couldn’t be in town earlier this month when I was baptized but an hour beforehand she sent me a text message saying “Wish I could be there, but you’re on my mind and in my hears, as always,” which means more to me than I can say. Any fellow convert will understand the magnitude of this statement and the truly amazing love that my mother shows for me. I am SO BLESSED to have her for my mother. I love her. I think I love her more than most people love their moms.

Oh my...

Today at the book store, after becoming thoroughly disappointed with the selection of LDS books (one book about the church and its members which was inaccurate, one “inspiring” story of how one woman had the “courage” to leave the church, a copy of the Book of Mormon [which was priced at almost $30; are they CRAZY?!], and copy of the Pearl of Great Price [which was also stupidly expensive]), I found myself in the Christian Inspiration section… It still feels really weird… If you’d told me a year ago that I’d ever be looking at books there I’d literally have laughed at you. I have certainly changed… :)

And Ben and I have discussed how I’ve got a lot of scripture… Ha! Although I suppose I do have a lot of scripture and other books about the church for a recent convert. Maybe I’ll end up like this guy. ^.^

This is really cool though. I’d love to be able to see it all up close. One of my school libraries (the Lilly Library at IU) has a copy of the Book of Mormon from its first mass production as well as a Gutenberg Bible which I really need to go see.

“I Ask You to Make Institute a Priority”

(a frequently used quotation from this message from President Monson: http://institute.lds.org/president-monson-institute/)

I’ll be at work tomorrow when I should be in class. *sigh* I seriously feel awful about it. I really do need the money, although that’s not the reason I’m going to work. And my job is literally three doors up the street from the Institute building. :(

Point Me.: To all of you who text in Church (You know who you are) → a-reason-to-believe.tumblr.com

templeboundparadox:

“With so many social media resources and a multitude of more or less useful gadgets at our disposal, sharing the good news of the gospel is easier and the effects more far-reaching than ever before. In fact, I am almost afraid that some listening have already sent text messages like ‘He’s been speaking for 10 minutes and still no aviation analogy!’ My dear young friends, perhaps the Lord’s encouragement to ‘open [your] mouths’ might today include ‘use your hands’ to blog and text message the gospel to all the world! But please remember, all at the right time and at the right place.”

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf (emphasis added) OK y’all. For real. Stop texting during Sacrament Meeting. It’s rude. And if you think that President Uchtdorf honestly told you to text the whole world during General Conference, you need to read a little closer and listen a little better. That was his subtle way of telling you to stop texting during sacred occasions. Like during General Conference. Or in Sacrament Meeting. And if you see someone texting in a sacred place, be your brother’s keeper and tell them to take it outside. It’s not mean. It’s not rude. It’s important, it’s reverent, and it shows the Lord that we come to Church to be serious, to feed and be fed, and to set a powerful example for everyone who might just walk through those doors and see us in our meetings. You never know who might be watching you.

My ward secretary texts during church… he’s like 50. I’d never tell him to stop because I don’t think it’s my place to tell him what to do, but I was pretty shocked when I saw him of all people doing it. He didn’t even stop when the speaker paused to say he used to be a high school teacher and he could tell when someone was sleeping or texting while he was talking. A lot of people say teenagers are disrespectful, but neither of the two teenagers in my ward (*cries*) even bring phones into the building with us.

I have all of the scriptures and a huge amount of other church materials on my phone (via Kindle, Margins, and some official LDS Church apps), as do a ton of other people in my branch. I used this almost exclusively before I got a proper set of scriptures at my baptism. I still use my phone at church for things like Gospel Principles (although never during sacrament meeting), but it’s always in airplane mode so I can’t send or receive texts or calls or use the internet. So, I try to give people the benefit of the doubt when I see them using their phones in church.
